IBM Hursley Music Club Midsummer Concert 2017

The weather gods smiled on us this year, as this year's summer concert came in the middle of a heatwave, the perfect weather for an evening's outdoor entertainment. Kate was kept busy at the temporary bar supplying everyone with cool drinks (and strawberries and cream). The IBM Hursley Music Club is one of the oldest subsections of the IBM Club. Its aims are to encourage and enjoy the performance, composition, and appreciation of all types of music. The club has held midsummer concerts in the sunken garden since the garden took its present form in the 1970’s. IBMers, families, friends and all club members are all welcome to join us, both to listen and to perform. The choir meets every Monday lunchtime in the Osman Room at the clubhouse at 12.15 and there's always room for more singers! If you enjoy singing, why not come along. 	Hursley Choir - Parlour Songs The IBM Hursley Music Club Choir started off the concert, singing a set of parlour songs with an invitation for the audience to join in on the choruses (words provided in the program): Won't You Buy My Pretty Flowers When You And I Were Young Come Back To Erin, Mavourneen Singing were: Stephen Hellberg (bass), Andrew Howes (bass), Neil Richards (tenor), Richard Chamberlain (tenor), Heather Callaway (alto), Heather Seaton (alto), Alison Lucas (soprano), Katherine Gunn (alto), Veronique Veness (alto), Barbara (soprano), Kathryn Briscoe (soprano), and Mike Bailey (conductor, director and bass).
Andrew Howes - Guitar No rest for Andrew, after singing with choir he moved straight on to playing guitar. He played a lovely selection of classical guitar, perfect for a summer's evening. This was all the more amazing as until he arrived to sing in choir he's no idea he'd need to play guitar too, but one of the Jive Bunnies had hurt her back so they couldn't sing this year and he kindly said he'd stand in. 	Courtyard Quintet The Courtyard Quintet made their debut performance in the Sunken Garden this year. They played a fine selection of pieces, from the local Lymington Quay to Gershwin: Relax Rumba by Paul Yoder Elizabethan Suite arr Tim Norris Lymington Quay by Tony Kitcherside Fascinating Rythm by George Gershwin Beethoven's 5th Bossa Nova by Terence Greaves The Courtyard quintet are a wind quintet performing in Southampton and surrounding area. The quintet is made up of Lynne Garrick on flute; Heather Grant on oboe; Paul Layland on clarinet; Phil Cree on French Horn and Berni Edwards on bassoon. Mike Bailey and Katherine Gunn - Recorders Next Music Club's Mike Bailey and Katherine Gunn played some lovely recorder duets on a variety of recorder sizes.
Hursley Choir The Music Club choir then returned to sing 3 more songs which ended the first half of the concert: My Sugar Is So Refined Spread A Little Happiness Chattanooga Choo Choo
	Hursley Swing Band After the interval, Hursley Swing Band played a wide variety of pieces in the rather hot Jim Hayes Hall. Their selection of pieces from throughout the Swing era featured the various sections of the band, from the trumpets, the saxophones and the trombones, not to mention some great drum solos. Hurley Swing Band were led by their fantastic MD, David Hall, who also plays saxophone.
